Learn more about digital inclusion

Our society is becoming more and more digital. What does this mean in our everyday lives? What is digital inclusion? What is the situation in Belgium?

Digital inclusion barometer

The King Baudouin Foundation's Digital Inclusion Barometer analyses digital inequalities in Belgium. Below you will find some figures. If you want to know more, read it here.

Digital exclusion is more than a gap between people with and without access to digital devices and the internet. Skills, motivation, support and your personal network also play an important role in digital inequality.

No less than 40% of Belgians between the ages of 16 and 74 are digitally vulnerable. This figure consists of 5% of non-users of the internet and 35% of people with weak digital skills. Educational attainment appears to be decisive for the level of digital vulnerability. As many as 68% of people with a low level of education are digitally vulnerable. There is also an increased digital vulnerability for job seekers (54%) and individuals with health conditions (58%). In terms of unequal access to the internet and digital technologies, there is a significant impact on low-income individuals, with 11% having no access to the internet and digital technologies at home and 25% have only a smartphone at their disposal. With 35%, Belgium scores worse than the European average and our neighbouring countries for digital skills. Moreover, this percentage is increasing among socially vulnerable target groups. This is also the case for our young people, with no less than 52% for young people with a low level of education. Online security is particularly low: 58% of Belgians have little or no digital skills.
